The Maltese Islands,located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea offer ideal nesting habitat to four species of seabirds as well as a resting/staging post for many others.
Since 1962, when the Malta Ornithological Society (now BirdLife Malta) was formed and especially with the setting up of the bird ringing scheme in 1965, seabirds have always attracted particular attention.
1968 - First visit to Filfla Island by BLM researchers 1969 - The largest Yelkouan Shearwater colony was discovered at Rdum tal-Madonna 1970 - Bird Studies on Filfla was published. 1983 - Long-term study on the breeding biology and ecology of Malta's seabirds was initiated. 1988 - Cory.s Shearwaters first breeding record on Fungus Rock 1991 - Cory's Shearwaters found breeding on the East Coast of Malta 1995 - Storm-petrel found breeding at Ta' Cenc cliffs, Gozo 1999 - Cory's Shearwaters first breeding record on Kemmuna Island 2006 - EU LIFE funded Garnija Project Launched 2007 - First electronically tagged Yelkouan Shearwaters 2008 - First Storm-petrel ringed away from Filfla 2009 - First Cory's Shearwater tagged in Malta 2012 - EU LIFE+ Malta Seabird Project Launched
